    THOMAS MORAN (American 1837-1926)
Beside the Stream, Santa Barbara, California 1917
    Oil on canvas
    8in. x 10in.
Signed and dated lower right, artist's thumbprint lower left

A highly-regarded Hudson River School artist in the waning decades of the mythical American West, Thomas Moran was born in England and came to the United States with his family in 1844. He made his first trip west in 1860, traveling shortly thereafter to England where he was greatly influenced by the atmospheric paintings of J.M.W. Turner. The young Moran also went to France and was impressed by Corot's paintings. Returning to the United States, he settled in California and devoted the rest of his career to painting landscapes of the American West. Along with Albert Bierstadt, Moran was responsible for exposing Eastern audiences to the magnificent landscape vistas of the West. In addition to his signature, this painting bears the artist's thumbprint in the lower left corner. From 1911 Moran began to place his thumbprint, in addition to his signature, on his works.
