Tiffany painted this intimate work when he was just 17 years old, and an aspiring painter. It dates from his period of residency at Eagleswood Military Academy in Perth Amboy, New Jersey, where he studied under George Inness. The image is a fascinating precursor in Tiffany's oeuvre to his use of the calla as a featured motif in his stained glass, lamps, decorative objects and architectural features.

Condition Report*: Under UV examination there are small areas of inpaint visible along perimeter of obverse where the frame rubbed against the panel, and a few spots of strengthening on the lower calla lily where the petal bends in.  The upper calla lily shows very slight strengthening along the major fold of the blossom, and in the space formed between it and the other flower. On verso: a small patch of strengthening occurs in the shadow between the petals of the central red cluster of flowers. Paint surface intact on both sides of the panel.
