Tiffany painted this intimate work when he was just 17 years old, and an aspiring painter. It dates from his period of residency at Eagleswood Military Academy in Perth Amboy, New Jersey, where he studied under George Inness. The image is a fascinating precursor in Tiffany's oeuvre to his use of the calla as a featured motif in his stained glass, lamps, decorative objects and architectural features.
