The tall blue and white Chinese export porcelain vase depicted in this painting was an object Paul Buchanan had purchased on March 31, 1984 from The Oriental Impression, Ltd., a gallery in St. Louis, Missouri specializing in oriental porcelain and objets d'art. He commissioned this still-life painting from the Indiana artist Frederik Grue specifying that it include the blue and white vase from his collection of Asian porcelain. The successful bidder for this still life painting will also receive the Chinese vase that inspired it.
