    Description

    RANDALL DAVEY (American, 1887-1964)
    Miss Taylor, c. 1915
    oil on canvas
    60 x 40 inches (152.4 x 101.6 cm)
Inscribed in black paint on frame (verso): Miss Taylor
    PROVENANCE:
    Private collection, New York.

This ambitious three-quarter length portrait of a young woman dates stylistically to c. 1915. The lush paint handling and the silvery tonal palette has strong affinities with Davey's bust-length Lady Wearing Hat (oil on canvas, 24 x 20 in., signed lower right) which was exhibited in Randall Davey, Artist / Bon Vivant, A Retrospective Exhibition, Santa Fe, Museum of Fine Arts / Midland, Texas, Museum of the Southwest / Louisville, J. B. Speed Art Museum, 1985, no. 3, ill.

Two years before he produced this work, which still bears the pronounced stylistic stamp of his teacher and mentor Robert Henri, Davey participated in the Armory Show of 1913. While he went on to explore many other subjects throughout the course of his artistic career, most notably the landscapes of the American Southwest and horse racing, portraiture was Davey's artistic mainstay. He won numerous awards for his portraits in the major American annual and biennial exhibitions.

Condition Report*: Very good condition. Original frame and stretcher. Canvas relined with Mylar and PE-CAP monofilmanet interleafs with dyed linen backing using Beva 371 adhesive. An area of paint loss in lower left corner was professionally inpainted with Maimeri restoration colors. A small tear in the bottom left of the figure's coat was professionally repaured with textile welding power and losses inpainted. There appears to be a ghost of a Randall Davey signature near the lower right corner at the bottom edge of the painting.
