    R. Storia, Elihu Vedder: American Visionary Artist in Rome (1836-1923), Rutherford, Madison and Teaneck, 1970, cat. no. 422, p. 331: This painting is probably identical with the work entitled "The Sorceress-Small" c. 1886 , listed in Regina Storia's book on the artist, and as such is one of three recorded versions of this subject by Vedder. The largest and first version was painted in 1872 ( cat. no. 235, p. 307) while the smallest version was painted c. 1876 on board measuring 7 5/8 x 3/38 in. (cat. no. 292, p. 313).

    Condition Report*:

Original stretcher bars and unlined canvas with artist's signature and inscription on verso. Visible under UV examination is a quarter-sized area of retouch in the center of the large brown urn on the right, which appears to repair a spot of abrasion, and three small touches of strengthening immediately to the right of the woman's gown on the chair.  Otherwise, the painting is completely untouched.

HA is a traditional auction house, they set up their auctions slightly different from typical domain auctions. This works well, it seems to be a good mix of old age (live bidding in a prestigious hotel) and new age (online bidding).
