    Inscription on label verso: "Judge John Bailhache / Grandfather of John [M. Bailhache] / and Great-Grandfather / of Preston L. Bailhache"

    NOTE:
    An attribution to George Catlin had been suggested during the 1970s.

    The sitter is Judge John Bailhache, who was a prominent editor and politician in the 1800s. He was born in New Jersey on May 8th 1787 and was one of the founders of the Ohio State Journal at Columbus. It is believed that he was a friend of Abraham Lincoln.


    Condition Report*: Wax re-lined canvas with completely stable paint film; faint accretions in lower left background and on sitter's (right) coat; faint craquelure, commensurate with age, on sitter's face and cravat; not examined under black light. Framed Dimensions 34.5 X 29 Inches
