Jan Matulka: A Catalogue of Selections from the Estate of Jan Matulka (1890-1972), essay by Henry Adams, Thomas McCormick Gallery, Chicago, 1999, cat. no. 95, p. 93.

Matulka has recently been included in the category of American painters who were influenced by the French fauves. Certain of his works from the mid-1920s, such as the present Houses on a Cove of c. 1925, exhibit an intensity of color and strength of design that warrant this distinction.

Condition Report*: Very good condition. Paint film in excellent condition. Visible under UV examination is a fine line of inpainting along right side of canvas where painting once rubbed against stretcher bar. Upper left and right corners also professionally inpainted where paint had abraded.  No other evidence of conservation or restoration.
