    By the Sea, Lulworth, 1857
    Oil on canvas
    10in. x 18in.

A New York native initially trained as an architect, Jasper Cropsey was one of the prominent artists of the Hudson River School and was renowned for his luminous land and seascapes. After exhibiting his first painting at the National Academy of Design in 1842, he became the youngest associate member of the Academy two years later. Cropsey made his first trip to Europe in 1847-49, producing sketches and finished paintings of local landscapes. Upon returning to the United States, Cropsey received many commissions and earned a reputation as a skilled landscape painter. The artist moved to England in 1856, where he would remain for seven years. During this period, Cropsey frequently depicted scenes along the Dorset coast, of which the present painting is an excellent example.
