    WALTER LAUNT PALMER (American 1854-1932)
    Winter Stream
    Oil on canvas
    25in. x 30in.
    Signed lower right

The son of a New York artist, Walter Palmer studied with the Hudson River School master, Frederic Church, and was exhibiting his paintings before the age of 20. He made the Grand Tour in 1873 and continued his artistic training in Paris in 1876. Palmer is best known for his snow-laden landscapes characterized by subtle color and controlled gradations of light and shadow. This painting is in the original Newcomb Macklin frame.

    Provenance: Private Collection, Dallas, TX
William E. Johnson Fine Art, Dallas, TX
    Rainone Galleries, Arlington, TX
acquired from the above by the present owner

On the reverse of a color photograph of the painting, which accompanies the lot, Maybelle Mann states: Painting mint condition, framed under glass, in original frame. A very fine example of the work of Walter Launt Palmer. This winter landscape 25x30 oil on canvas is ca. 1890-1910. His "thin" signature is typical of this era. Mrs. Mann coauthored the definitive catalogue raisonné of the artist's work, Walter Launt Palmer: Poetic Reality, published by Schiffer Publishing in 1984. The painting is unpublished.

Condition Report*: Very good condition; unlined original canvas; some retouching in lower right; signature is faint.
