    Description

    GEORGE INNESS (American, 1825-1894)
    The Rainbow, circa 1878
    Oil on artist's paperboard
    9-1/4 x 13-1/8 inches (23.5 x 33.5 cm)
    Signed lower left corner: G.I.

    PROVENANCE:
    Sale, Barridoff Galleries, South Portland, Maine, August 3, 2007, no. 232;
    Private collection, Savannah, Georgia.

    This painting will be included in the supplement to Dr. Michael Quick's George Inness catalogue raisonné. We are grateful to him for confirming the authenticity of this painting based on firsthand examination, and for suggesting a date of circa 1878 for its production.

    In private correspondence, Michael Quick carefully identified the many features of this wild landscape and described how Inness integrated them into a fully finished studio production:

    "The Rainbow presents a dramatic scene of a storm deep in the mountain wilderness. Beyond the grassy immediate foreground, light strikes rocks in the center and low trees on the left. Farther back on the left, tall trees rise on a slope. In the middle ground on the right, light strikes the back of a stream and the bushes near it. Behind them rise tall trees in front of a steeply rising forested slope. Flowing out of the center distance, a shallow brook meanders through the middle distance and passes over rapids, before veering toward the right and the lower right corner. Over the brook and between the facing slopes at either side can be seen a distant mountain, forested on its lower slopes, its top partially hidden in cloud. In the heavily clouded sky, a storm is clearing off toward the right, leaving the partial arc of a rainbow at upper right."

    "Although informally painted in the brook and foliage, with an expressive quality to some of the free brushwork, The Rainbow is a fully finished studio painting, as indicated by the colored glazes that create such deep, soft shadows. The painting's conspicuous technique, expressive brushwork, high contrast, and storm subject all suggest a date around 1878."

    Condition Report*: Half-inch scratch in lower right corner with flake of paint loss; 3/4 inch scratch with no paint loss in upper right quadrant in a dark cloud.  UV examination reveals heavy varnish layer applied; inpainting to upper horizontal edge and minor scattered points throughout composition; otherwise very good condition.

    It would indeed have been much simpler to work with a local auction house, and we had local options. But we never once regretted going with Heritage.
