Bruce Crane was described in 1894 as "among [the] most popular painters of landscape" in the United States. A leading figure of Tonalism in New York and Connecticut, he was renowned for his ability to achieve rich golden tones in his landscape paintings. Crane studied in New York with Alexander Wyant, from whom he learned a style of painting that emphasized mood over topographical accuracy. He also spent time in France, where he was influenced by the Barbizon School. With its rich tonal gradations in the sky and stream, this painting demonstrates Bruce Crane's characteristic landscape style.
