    A successful leading artist in New York in the early 20th century, Everett Shinn was best known for his Social-Realist subjects such as this painting of transients in Washington Square Park. At the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts he studied under Thomas Anshutz and then worked as a staff artist for the Philadelphia Press with George Luks, William Glackens, and John Sloan - this group, part of the future "Eight" group, centered around Robert Henri's studio. Shinn was also a highly successful theatrical designer, and muralist, and was elected to the National Academy of Design in 1949.
