    Landscape, circa 1900-1920
    Oil on panel
    18-1/2 x 24-1/4 inches (46.9 x 61.5 cm)

The subtle nuances of color gradation within a relatively narrow range of hues signals this work as an example of American tonalist painting from the early years of the 20th century. While a particular name cannot be attached to it, the work reflects the techniques favored by tonalists--specifically the practice of glazing portions of the image with translucent layers of pigment to soften the contours of objects and suggest rather than define a mood. There are affinities with the work of George Inness as well as the brilliant luminosity favored by William Keith.

An attribution to the American landscapist Louis Paul Dessar (American, 1867-1952) has been suggested.

Condition Report*: Normal signs of wear as appropriate with age, and reinforced with a cradling on the verso due to age cracks in the panel.
