A Classic Navajo Man's Wearing BlanketSecond Phase Chief's Pattern
c. 1860 - 1865
native handspun wool, indigo, cochineal and aniline
This lot is accompanied by a copy of the red dye test results.
Dimensions: 62 x 73 ½ inches
Condition Report*:
In overall very good condition. No holes; warp and weft intact. No fading. Approx. four to five very light stains. Selvedge and corner ties intact (possibly restored). Under black light several areas fluoresce indicating restoration, including three long strips, each approx. 73 ½" x ½", and one shorter strip, approx. 6" x 1/8", through the center. As well, two strips, one approx. 73 ½ " x 1 ½", and the other approx. 9 x 1/8", and six areas, ranging from approx. 1 x 1 ½" to approx. 2 x 2", along the edges. The wool samples submitted for the dye tests came back with the results of cochineal for two samples and aniline for one. The wool sample showing aniline was taken from a restored area.
