T.C. Cannon's art career was tragically cut short by a car accident in 1978. Only thirty-one years old, Cannon had already established an impressive reputation. He grew up in the Kiowa and Caddo tribes in Oklahoma and was greatly influenced by the early Native American artists who had come to prominence in the early twentieth century. He attended the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe, where he studied under Fritz Scholder. He served as a paratrooper in Vietnam and was honored for his bravery there. Cannon's work draws heavily on his tribal traditions; he frequently painted his subjects in their finest regalia harkening back to an earlier time, but placing them in modern contexts. He was a student of Native American history, as well as art history and would reference the latter in many of his paintings and prints. For example in "Indian in Rocker," Cannon cleverly places his version of a Van Gogh landscape on the wall behind the figure. He often experimented with a variety of media, including lithography and wood block prints.
