Description

    Three Colima Obsidian Swords

    Colima
    C. 200 BC-200 AD
    Mahogany Obsidian
    9¾" to 11"

A cache of blades known to be used within the Colima and Nayarit regions as weaponry, burial offerings, and daily use. The colorful knives are expertly bi-facially knapped into thin, fragile blades from choice mahogany obsidian, a volcanic glass these ancient cultures could find access to and served as excellent tool making material. Such knives are seen in pottery depictions of warriors of the Colima culture in battle scenes and individual figures who menacingly show the swords. Often found as large caches, the mahogany obsidian examples also appear to have had ritual significance and would have been necessary in the afterlife. The examples here are intact, only lightly cleaned and with only a few minor nicks. Characteristic of ancient knives, particularly obsidian bi-facials, is that a need to hold them without cutting ones own hand was carefully considered by the knapper. All three examples can comfortably fit within the palm only at one location.
