DescriptionThree Andean Steatite Effigies
Tierra de los Indios, Western Andes
C. 1000-1500 AD
1½" to 3½" Tall
Two pendants are carved in an anthropomorphic image of human headed frogs, both drilled under the arms for suspension, and a wide elliptical headed flat idol of a standing man. He is carved with notched hair, long eyes, arms to the sides with hands upon the torso, a belt at the waist, and short disproportionate legs, possibly indicative of a seated pose. This idol is undrilled, showing it was purely a votive idol. The effigies come from the Western Andes, Tierra de los Indios Region.
Estimate: $1,000 - $1,500.
