DescriptionTairona Gold Zoomorph Pendant
C. 800-1200 AD
Gold , 33 grams, including some original casting core
The pendant is cast in a high karat gold with dualistic zoomorphs, the front image being a bat with the body of a frog while the rear is a reptile headed bird. The casting shows a face with round ears, flat nose, beady eyes, short legs in front, wide mouth spanning from ear to ear, the neck gracefully extending into a frog's body with the rear legs ready to leap. The opposing effigy is fashioned into a flying reptile headed bird, the neck raised with a curling nose, a broad rectangular bordered open mouth, with the wings extended on the sides and the tail being spread behind. Each head is ornamented with two stripes of fine small loops running from the nose to the back. A wonderful example with strong ancient patina and only a few small weak casting holes. The dramatic imagery morphing the two deities together is a powerful rendering that exemplifies the careful planning the ancient artisans were capable of.
Estimate: $3,500 - $4,500.
