Tairona Gold Plated Deity Pendant

    C. 1000-1500 AD
    Gold Plated Tumbaga
    2¾" Wide x 2¼" Tall

The figure is lost wax cast in the image of a standing anthropomorph , the broad shoulders with a chain design spanning the width, another at the waist, and scrolling decoration at each hand. The jutting face has bat-like eyes and snout, large spiraling earplugs, and a labret protruding at the chin. The figure wears a wide headdress with two half circle decorated panels, a scrolling antennae between, a bat suspended below each, a dangling flange on either side, and two suspension loops on the back. The pendant is cast from tumbaga and plated with gold. The ancient Tairona and other cultures were able to apply gold plate by utilizing citric acids in an electroless deposition process coating the object with a thin layer of gold. One dangling ornament is damaged and included and one side with modern repair, else very nice condition.
