DescriptionSinu Lidded Marriage Rites Vessel
C. 800-1200 AD
Buff Terra Cotta
14½" Tall x 7" Wide
The ceremonial jar is designed with a band of abstract panels at the rim, the lid with impressed diamond shaped patterns and displays two figures seated back to back on the same stool created with three legs. Both figures site boldly upright with elliptical shaped heads, the chests with various patterns, and holding a large staff of power in their right, the left with a cup. One figure is a male and the other female. The figures are ceremonially performing their marriage rites. The two figures would have been further decorated through shallow holes surrounding the heads, probably to hold human hair plugs. The vessel base is intact and the lid expertly reconstructed and appears intact. This lot requires third party shipping.
