DescriptionPolished Guerrero Serpentine "T" Pendant
C. 400 BC-200 AD
4 1/8" Wide x 3 1/8" High
The unusual stone pendant is ground from a softly contoured fine grained green serpentine made into an ovular form with notching on either side, a wide groove in the center, and a small drilled suspension hole. These images from Guerrero closely resemble the later Maya 'T' shaped pendants representing the hieroglyph ik', which meant "breath" or "wind". The long grooved line and choice of stone are also reminiscent of earlier, more flattened Olmec 'spoons' which were snuff tablets for ritual hallucinogenic materials snorted from the long flat area via a bone or jade tube.
