DescriptionPair of Jalisco Fertility Rattle Effigies
C. 200 BC-200 AD
8½" Tall Each
The two women stand with broad shoulders, thick hips, wide thighs, the faces in a 'sheep' style with long noses, each being a hollow effigy with only the tiniest of vent holes. Such figures would have originally been fired containing rattle beads inside and used for fertility ceremonies. Both are in solid condition with surface losses. This is a matched set, practically identical, with remains of swirling designs on the breasts and identical paint, craftsmanship, and patina.
