DescriptionOlmec Seated Figure with Yugito
C. 800-400 BC
Orange Terra Cotta
5½" Tall x 3½" Wide
The figure sits with the legs spread apart, hands connected to legs, wearing a cap with tuft ornaments and lappets to sides, and holds a squarish object in the right, possibly a small yugito for use in the ballgame ceremony. The yugito was a deeply arched protective guard held in the hand or covering the knees, most likely made from a perishable material. The figure appears to have been holding a similar object at the left hand, missing from ancient times. Modern fill to area at left foot, head reattached, and left leg and appears excellent.
Estimate: $800 - $1,200.
