DescriptionObsidian Sword and Other Implements
Pre-Classic Central America
C. 1100 BC and C. 200-600 AD
14" Long, Others, 1¼" to 3"
The heavily used early formative period sword measures a lengthy 14 inches exhibiting both long strikes as well as being flaked. An intimidating and important weapon, the piece has seen extensive hand wear and is carefully struck to provide a comfortable grip only in one direction for either hand. Originally made through four huge strikes creating the piece, it has been re-struck, chipped, and flaked over the period of use and retains a vast amount of root markings and deposits. It is quite likely the knife was excavated in Mayan times and then re-worked and became an heirloom object. Accompanied by three Maya spears, a broken fragment, and two flat jewelry pieces.
