DescriptionMochica III Ai Apaec Deity Stirrup Bottle
Mochica Phase III
C. 100- 500 AD
Burnished and Painted Ceramic
The mold made deity sits with hands on the knees, wearing a tunic with large banded collar over the shoulders, intensely staring ahead with snake fangs protruding from his mouth. Two snakes slither around his back and expose their heads atop with mountain peaks exposed upon his back. Ai Apaec was considered as the decapitator god by the Moche and brought victory in battle. The vessel is covered with an orange slip, cream and black paint, the spout reattached and repair to lip and appears intact and excellent.
Estimate: $2,000 - $3,000.
