DescriptionMochica Hollow Gold Man
C. 100 BC-200 AD
The effigy offering figure is carefully crafted in two halves with a relief of a short squatty man wearing a cap, his hair flowing behind, wearing a shirt, and the face with detailed features of open eyes, low relief nose, and puffy cheeks. The hollow figurine is crafted from two heavy higher karat sheets, more than likely, initially pressed and molded upon a ceramic or stone figure, then the two pieces with gold soldered caps on top and bottom, each end with a small piercing, possibly for suspension on a necklace. The figure is complete and reproduces the more common small Moche votive effigy terra cotta figurines of a molded man and woman often found associated within burials. The effigy is in excellent condition, interestingly, with one tiny triangular ancient repair piece soldered on the back, most likely, patching a small weak spot when it was first crafted.
