DescriptionMixtec Tripod Incense Offering Plate
C. 1200-1400 A.D
3" Tall x 11" Wide
Standing on three short supports, the finely crafted thin and delicate dish displays brilliant imagery and vivid original pigments against a cream slip. Painted in yellow and brown on the exterior flaring wall, there are alternating long dashes and vertical stripes. The interior base shows a tied bag and mat element while a large central eye becomes part of an abstract bird head. Upon the interior wall, duplications of earlier Maya hieroglyphs show a reverence to the past and to heirloom objects. The Mixtec culture coexisted with the Aztec due to royal family ties, however, as the Aztec imposed their newly created deities on their empire, the Mixtec themselves were subject to creating high quality wares with the Aztec imagery. This fine example appears to be formative imagery combining qualities of Maya, Aztec, and Mixtec into an abstract combination, reminiscent of Modernist art. With only two areas of repaired shards at the rim, a light stabilized line, the fragile plate is well preserved and rare to see the paint so intact.
Estimate: $3,000 - $4,000.
