DescriptionMixtec Green Stone Idol
C. 1000-1400 AD
Green Stone, Possibly Serpentine
The figure sits with legs slightly bent sitting on a stool, the hands joined against the chest, the face framed within a headdress having one central ornament, large round earflares, and with grooved details for the cheeks as well as notches for nose and mouth. The pendant was originally carved from a celt form and has a rounded back, the two frontal faces string cut forming a right angle and then squared at either end. Details are created using both drilling and string cutting techniques to form the round circles and lines. Such idols have been considered as a monetary exchange unit and found in various sizes, this being a very nice sized example, intact, and with strong ancient patina and deposits.
