DescriptionMezcala Green Stone Axe God with Dual Imagery
C. 800-400 BC
Speckled Green Hard Stone
The dense green and black speckled votive effigy is crafted from a celt form, probably diorite, and shows a standing human-like figure with grooved areas delineating the arms, waist, and legs. The face is ground with the unusual trait of having the nose ending a continuous border surrounding the face and without the normal groove for a human mouth. The entire face is reminiscent of later culture's owl effigy faces. The top of the head is flattened and pitted, as if the piece was used for pounding, and, in the context of turning the idol upside down, one sees a completely different image of an animal's head. The beast has tall pointed ears, wide slanting oval eyes, and a gaping huge mouth with downturned corners. A tongue is created from the face of the initial image. A highly interesting example with strong patina and ancient encrustations.
