DescriptionMayan Head Cup of a Priest
C. 600-900 AD
Burnished Pottery with Stucco
The vessel stands on a pedestal base forming the man's neck, the hair with a tight flange drawing the hair behind and two bound panels woven in. At each ear, the man has large ears on the lobes, each with a hanging loop with small animal effigies dangling. The face shows intense stern thin face with a gaunt jawline, large 'Roman' nose, large low relief orbs, and a cleft chin. The nature of the deep separation between the exposed mouth and sharp gaunt jaw infers he is probably wearing a mask. The cup is reconstructed from original pieces; losses to the headdress and ear ornaments; overall with a smooth gray burnished surface; and, retains areas of original white, red, and blue gesso. The vessel would have originally been completely covered in fragile ancient gesso and a prized treasure.
