DescriptionMaya Tripod with Teotihuacan Influence Design
Maya, Southern Lowlands
C. 200-600 AD
5¼" Tall x 4¼" Wide
The incense offering vessel is supported on three nubbin feet, the body overall with a smooth burnished beige ground, and carved with a diagonal band surrounding the wall. The carved design shows an abstract reptilian underworld monster mounted with a profile image of a king with a large plumed headdress, earflare, and other morphing imagery. The vessel is in a style duplicating Teotihuacan pottery due to the strong influence the Teotihuacan city had over certain Maya regions. The Maya kings would ceremonially travel to Teotihuacan upon ascension to the seat of power and would learn from the royal members and scribes there, returning with trade wares, codices, and ideas. The Southern Maya potters would then recreate the design elements. The vase is intact and excellent, with a few ancient rim nicks.
