DescriptionMaya Skeletal Deity Cup
C. 400-600 AD
Red Painted Pottery
The ceremonial cup sits on a flaring pedestal base, the round body decorated with a relief depiction of a skeletal deity or flayed head with large spherical eyes, brow, the bare nostril cavity exposed, and the mouth an d jaw with no covering. On either side of the mouth are applied long pieces showing jaw muscles. The deity retains dangling ornaments at each ear and lacks any acknowledgement of hair.
