DescriptionMaya Seated Deity Bottle
C. 400-600 AD
The figure sits serenely upon crossed legs, the arms against the body and hands gripping the shins. The head leans forward slightly with a triangular shape face painted in light brown. The eyes appear closed while the open mouth shows two teeth, the lips sharply dropping in a look of extreme anguish. He wears a large head wrapping that rises to the front and surrounds the crown, a band of florets below, and a textile collar painted in brown that exhibits dangling ornaments. Overall in a rare pale orange, this refined figure served as a jar that contained precious herbs, poisons, or paints. Intact with losses to the headdress and expected pitting, he expresses a significance to the contents, for this, most likely a toxic mixture for communicating with the underworld.
