Description

Maya Molded Orangeware Cup with Chacs

Maya, Southern Lowlands
C. 600-900 AD
Slipped Pottery
3" Tall x 4¾" Wide

The short cup is mold made and covered with a pale to bright orange slip. The walls depict two panels, slightly different, with detailed images of the feathered bird headed serpent Chac with a curling beak, fangs, a plumed crest on the head, and tongue hanging out. Alternating between these are panels of a stair stepped temple design. Cup is reglued from two pieces, an ancient chip at rim, else very nice.
