Maya Jadeite Heirloom and Seated Chief Pendants

    Maya, Southern Lowlands
    C. 600-900 AD
    Soapstone and Jadeite
    1¾" to 3½" Long

The smaller example is carved from very nice dark green jadeite, three sides original to the carving, and one side exhibiting ancient string cutting and heavy wear showing the piece was from a longer pendant that was cut into sections and given to heirs. The existing design shows a very elaborate scene with a serpent snouted deity, undulating rope like designs and several eyes and earflares. The pendant is intentionally created in this section. The larger idol is carved in a very pale lime green colored soap stone material depicting a squatting man with knees upbent, arms and hands resting upon them, he wears a plumed headdress, flares, and the rear also carved showing his hair, shoulders, arms, and buttocks. This pendant is pierced  for suspension through the rear of head, the area below the feet, and also at both shoulders. The mouth area with some ancient loss, else intact.
