DescriptionMaya Cup with Carved Resurrection God
Maya, Southern Lowlands
C. 600-900 AD
Polished Terra Cotta
5¼" Tall x 6" Wide
The vessel is crafted in a thin brown, the interior being smooth, the exterior worn and probably originally covered with fragile stucco paint. On the outer wall, two circular panels depict the Resurrection God with a downward turned snout, earflares with crosses, bundles emanating from the nose, a large tied knot over the head, and two teeth in the open mouth. Between each deity head is a column of three glyphs with numeral attachments. The vase is intact with only one stable stress line.
Estimate: $1,500 - $2,500.
