Large Rio Magdalena Storage Urn

    Rio Magdalena
    C. 800-1500 AD
    Buff Terra Cotta
    33" Tall

The storage vessel features two large vulture-like avian zoomorphs on either side of the body, each with a long drooping beak, wearing a cap, having feet, the wings sharply arching, and having hands. Upon the lid, a human torso emerges from the dome shaped cover, having subtly curved shoulders, large hands in front, and a wide half circular face with a groove separating the cropped hair, slits for the eyes and mouth, the nose with pierced septum, and the spine and buttocks pronounced on the back. The face of the figure retains a beige slip else all else is buff. The urns would have been used for food and water storage as well as burial offerings in the afterlife. Due to the fragile nature and large size, the base is expertly repaired from many pieces and appears intact and the lid, expertly repaired on the dome cover, while the figure itself is intact. This lot requires third party shipping.
