DescriptionLarge Maya Temple Incense Burner with Teotihuacan Influence
Maya, Southern Lowlands
C. 200-600 AD
8" Tall x 11¼" Wide
The tripod is a particularly large and well modeled offering vessel standing on three square legs with relief molded panels of a standing man wearing a serpent headdress. The vessel body has a long diagonal panel carved with a crocodilian body with long curling snout, the body with scaling, various birds, a large tied bundle, and curling interwoven panels with punctated lines. The tail tapers into the upper corner; the image exhibiting a very strong Teotihuacan influence. The surrounding vessel body has smooth burnished diagonal ribbing. A lovely and impressive example. Vessel is uncleaned, retaining strong patina and deposits, an area at rim with modern fill and not affecting the images, one side with three large shards cleanly reattached, and some repairs to the feet. This lot requires third party shipping.
