DescriptionInteresting Michoacan "Marriage" Vessel
C. 400 BC-200 AD
3" Tall x 10¾" Long
The unusual offering vessel is comprised of two deep hemispherical cups standing on short pedestals and joined at the lip and also with long rod on either side. The cups are painted in deep red, one with two depictions of a four legged animal and a reptilian creature; the other cup with abstract wings and a large circle. The vessel may have been a ceremonial cup used in a marriage ceremony or a burial offering for two items needing to be combined at some point in the afterlife. One cup has area of modern fill at the rim, else they are solid and complete.
