Important Cocle Gold Finial Pendant

    C. 800-1200 AD
    2ΒΌ" Tall x 4" Wide x 2" Deep, 241.6 grams

The high karat pendant is cast in a flared bell form with large open cavity, one side with two suspension loops for wearing as a pendant, the other with three protruding hooks for attaching further dangling ornamentation. The bell cavity would have conformed to insertion of a thick tusk, possibly from a peccary, or a whale tooth cemented within and could have been pinned by utilizing the two small holes on one side. The crown has 'V' shaped ornamentation and mounted with a triangle panel on one side, the empty spot probably a recess for attachment of another ornament of amber or an emerald. The sides have a janus form image showing two large saurian deities having bulging eyes emerging from the head, a curling snout, bands across the neck, and a small curling dewlap crest. Attaching to the neck and lower jaw of the lizard is a secondary flat panel of another saurian image having a scrolling snout and open mouth baring sharp teeth and void of eyes.

The impressive heavy ornament was sand cast in the lost wax process and would have required a large team of workers to maintain a high enough temperature to melt this amount of gold and quickly cast the piece. Being quite a challenge to accomplish, the example exhibits areas of added pours to complete the artwork due to the initial pour having empty pockets. An excellent example for studying the ancient casting techniques.

Finial is in an excellent state of preservation and covered with ancient mineral growths and patina.

    Estimate: $24,000 - $32,000.
