DescriptionHuastec Tea Pot with Deity
C. 600-900 AD
7¼" Tall x 7½" Wide
The smooth buff vessel sits with round saucer form, a rising neck with flaring lip, and the backside with a narrow pouring spout. At the neck, in relief, a bird like effigy has bulging eyes, human ears, and open beak with protruding tongue. Surrounding the vessel are details in brown including spotting, swirling designs, a sun shaped pendant, and banding. Interesting similarities between the panels on this vessel and later Casas Grande designs. The jar is intact and solid with surface erosion to the paint, a few small pit marks, and only lightly cleaned, retaining ancient encrustations within and on the exterior.
Estimate: $1,200 - $1,800.
