DescriptionFine Maya Woman's Face Fragment
Maya, Southern Lowlands
C. 600-900 AD
5¼" Tall x 6½" Wide
The woman poses with a natural, serene appearance, her high arching brow accenting the open eyes while the mouth is lightly open exposing a row of teeth, and the small receding chin causing a chubbiness to the cheeks. She wears an elaborately woven head wrap, the top of head covered, an area of cropped hair exposed, and earflares with central plugs show that this was a woman of royalty. The face, ears, top of head, and back all in a brilliant orange slip while the hair, flares, and wrap are smooth buff with red pigment. Fragment is a broken head from a large bell shaped statue from the Southern Lowlands and has the right ear attached, with some losses, and the nose restored. A bold example on custom display.

It would indeed have been much simpler to work with a local auction house, and we had local options. But we never once regretted going with Heritage.View More Testimonials
