Description

Early Maya Tube Incense Burner Face Effigy

    Maya, Highlands Region
    C. 200 BC-200 AD
    Painted Terra Cotta
    8¼" Tall x 8½" Wide

The early example is crafted in a barrel shaped tube form with flared rim. The face shows pierced eyes, a wide mouth with a tooth, spikey nodes erupting from the cheeks and top of head, and two flange panels decorated with dots. The face is painted in red while the flanges retain blue. This type of incensario would have been used for highland Maya cave offerings where copal would be placed directly on the ground, the tubular pottery effigy set to surround the smoldering pile. Examples of large caverns filled with such burners have been documented, however, painted examples are particularly rare. The example has some normal roughness to the lip and a few light stable surface lines, otherwise, is in excellent condition.
