DescriptionChavin Janus Form Transformational Deity Cup
C. 600-200 BC
Slipped and Burnished Ceramic
7¼" Tall x 6" Wide
The tall vase depicts a shaman fully transformed into the were-jaguar alter ego with squared ears, drooping eyes, feline nose, and a wide toothy mouth with squared human teeth and four long jaguar fangs. The reverse depicts an intermediate transforming stage for the shaman that is incised upon a lightly sculpted backside. The face retains a long human like nose, the nostrils curling into a feline's features, the wide mouth with only the upper fangs having emerged, while the eyes are formed by the curling tails of a serpent. The vessel is expertly repaired from original pieces and appears excellent. A rare example.
Estimate: $3,500 - $4,500.
