c. 1889

Cabinet card with imprint of Frank Jay Haynes, then of Bismarck, N.D. Pencil inscription below image: "Crow, 1889." This elaborate, deluxe print has been hand colored by Haynes. Pasted labels and stamping, verso, from former owner, Culver Pictures, Inc.

"Yellow Dog" (at the right) is a poor translation, more commonly rendered as Old Coyote (the coyote so old---therefore, powerful and wise---his fur has faded yellow). He was a prominent warrior of his own generation; his sons, grandsons and great-grandsons have been decorated veterans of the U.S. Army in every conflict since the First World War. A great-grandson, Dr. Barney Old Coyote, Jr., is a distinguished Montana educator. A hand mirror mounted in a wooden frame decorated with brass tacks hangs from Old Coyote's wrist. Both men wear brass arm bands. Big Medicine was later the Chief of Police at Crow Agency, Montana. He holds a paper fan. The triangular piece of beadwork in his lap---another Haynes prop---is the decorative tab for the haft of a tomahawk. It is now in the collection of Montana Historical Society. Other views of this grouping, same sitting, appear in Freeman Tilden, Following the Frontier, with F. Jay Haynes: 204 & 212.

    Dimensions: image, 4 x 5 ¾ inches; mount, 4 ¼ x 6 ½ inches
