Description

THE LEGENDARY "STANDING ROCK" (INYAN BOSLAL), FROM WHICH THE STANDING ROCK RESERVATION TAKES ITS NAME
    c. 1883

Boudoir card with imprint of "Barry, Bismarck and Standing Rock, D.T." A glacial boulder originally located five miles north of Fort Yates, Agent McLaughlin had it moved to the Agency compound in the autumn of 1883, and mounted on a stone pedestal. "The Standing Rock, from which the Agency at Fort Yates took its name, was a remarkable petrifaction in the shape of a woman with a child on her back. The figure was very lifelike and the Indians had no doubt [about the tale] ...Along with this rock there was another that was also medicine [of spiritual significance], it being the petrifaction of a little dog, which Indian belief declared belonged to the woman and must be kept with her" (James McLaughlin, My Friend, the Indian: 35-39). Barry was present to record the ceremony of the stone's unveiling in its new home, making several views on that occasion. This is a unique, close-up of the installation, not otherwise known. Alternate views in the Denver Public Library Collection are Neg. Nos. B-565, B-566 & B-794.
