    RUNNING DEER, CROW
    c. 1889

    Cabinet card with imprint of Frank Jay Haynes, then of Bismarck, N.D. Pencil inscription below image: "Crow Ind., 1889." This deluxe print has been delicately hand colored by Haynes. Pasted labels and stamping, verso, from former owner, Culver Pictures, Inc.

    Better known by the name Hoop on the Forehead, this man is shown in a full-face portrait, same sitting, in Freeman Tilden, Following the Frontier, with F. Jay Haynes: 104. A glass bead, a piece of abalone shell and a brass clock gear hang from brass wire rings pierced through the cartilage of his ear. The loom-beaded strap of an Ojibwa bandolier bag---a Haynes prop that appears in other Indian portraits---crosses his shoulder.
