c. 1883

Crow Foot: An albumen print, no photographer's imprint, but identical to Neg. No. B-142 in the D.F. Barry Archive Collection at Denver Public Library. Various dates have been alleged for the birth of Crow Foot, son of Sitting Bull's senior wife Four Robes. He is here clearly at least ten years of age or a bit older, so would have been born in the early-1870s. After the Battle of Little Bighorn in 1876, the Teton Lakota alliance led by Sitting Bull fled into Canada, where they hoped to maintain their freedom. There, they were welcomed by their former enemies the Blackfeet. In gratitude, Sitting Bull named his young son after the Blackfeet Head Chief. After returning to the U.S. in 1881, as members of Sitting Bull's family Crowfoot and his sister were held as prisoners-of-war at Fort Randall, D.T., until 1883, when all were sent to the Standing Rock Reservation in present North Dakota, where this portrait was made. Crowfoot was murdered at the age of about seventeen by the same Agency Indian police who arrested and then killed his father. When Sitting Bull was shot down in the dooryard of the family's log cabin, a firefight erupted with Sitting Bull's followers. The policemen then took refuge in the cabin, where they murdered Crow Foot in cold blood.

Standing Holy: An albumen print, no photographer's imprint, but identical to Neg. Nos. B-144 & B-161 in the D.F. Barry Archive Collection at Denver Public Library. Shown here at the age of about six years, Standing Holy was the daughter of Sitting Bull's junior wife, Seen by the Nation. The cartilage of each ear has been twice pierced to support long earrings formed of white dentalium shells laced between leather spacers. A network of glass beads is worn over her cloth dress. After Sitting Bull and Crow Foot were murdered, his widows and surviving children fled to the Pine Ridge Reservation, South Dakota, early in 1891. Standing Holy was then about fourteen years old. She later married at Pine Ridge, and survived until 1926.
