Description

NORTHERN CHEYENNE PRISONERS AWAITING TRIAL IN DODGE CITY, KANSAS, STEREOVIEW BY J. R. RIDDLE

Photographer's studio imprint, verso. Light soiling and bumped edge upper right.

This rare image from the Indian Wars era was made at the behest of Franklin Adams, the first secretary of the Kansas State Historical Society. Riddle took this photograph on April 30, 1879. Following their harrowing trek from Indian Territory to Montana in the fall of 1878 Little Wolf and Dull Knife split up along the Niobrara River in Nebraska. Dull Knife decided to lead his people to Fort Robinson thinking it was still Red Cloud Agency. It wasn't and ultimately the tragic "breakout" occurred on January 9, 1879. Warrants for the arrest of Dull Knife and leaders of his band had already been issued in Kansas, the result of raids the previous fall. So, after the "breakout" the men in this photograph were extradited to Kansas to face trial. Back Row (left to right) - Tangle Hair (Dog Soldier Chief), Strong Left Hand, Old Crow, Porcupine. Front Row (left to right) - Wild Hog (Elkhorn Scrapper Chief), George Reynolds (Interpreter), Noisy Walking, Blacksmith.
