NOON DAY SUN, POWATCH, and "A UTE BRAVE"c. 1874 Noon Day Sun (Tar-boo-cha-ket), Brother of Chief Ouray, Ute, by William H. Jackson, Denver, Colorado, c. 1874. Title appears lettered in the negative, at bottom. Albumen print mounted on board.
Translation of the man's name, usually not given, comes from an alternate view, same sitting, in the American Antiquarian Society, Philadelphia, Cat. No. 154. The handsome, younger brother of the well-known chief is dressed in a wool shirt, with a necklace of large, glass beads and a peace medal. A beaded strap crosses his torso. This likely was made of red wool cloth, beaded in white, black and blue patterns. The strap probably supported a powder horn. His white felt hat is seen at lower left.

Powatch, Ute, by William H. Jackson, Denver, Colorado, c. 1874. Title appears lettered in the negative, at bottom of the oval format. Albumen print mounted on board.
The young man's braided hair is wrapped with strips of otter fur. A necklace of large, glass beads. and a conch-shell disc, together with nickel-silver arm bands, accent his plain, wool shirt. Given his youth, probably he was a son of the Ute war chief of the same name often photographed in the 1860s.

"A Ute Brave." Unidentified man by William H. Jackson, Denver, Colorado, c. 1874. Title appears lettered in the negative, at bottom. Albumen print mounted on board.
This unidentified, young man's light-colored eyes are evidence of nearly three centuries of intermarriage between people of the Ute tribe and immigrant Spanish settlers of northern New Mexico, beginning in 1598. These "unions" ran the gamut from rape, to enforced prostitution, to marriage. Some Spanish (later, Mexican) children were captured, adopted and raised as Utes. Other mixed-race individuals resulted from Mexican (Comanchero) traders visiting Indian communities. The son of two cultures seen here wears a long-sleeved, gingham shirt, and dark wool vest with (apparently) a pocket watch at the end of the brass chain. His carefully-combed hair is wrapped with strips of otter fur and accented at the part with a silver button.

It would indeed have been much simpler to work with a local auction house, and we had local options. But we never once regretted going with Heritage.View More Testimonials
